Project Overview: <br>
Methuen Falls Hydroelectric Company has installed updated controls and automation at its existing facility on the Spicket River in Methuen, MA. The project will enable the facility to increase generation by at least 21 percent, or about 250,000 kWh per year, by activating a currently idle 85 kW turbine and optimizing its operation with that of the main 250 kW turbine. The facility will continue to operate in run-of-river mode, but the upgraded controls will allow it to make use of flows in excess of the 250 kW turbine’s capacity, as well as low flows below the minimum flow requirements of that unit. Total project cost is $85,000, toward which MTC will provide a grant of $40,000. The owner of Methuen Hydroelectric is experienced in the integration of automated control systems for electrical energy projects and will be supplying a 53 percent cost-share in the form of in-kind labor. Methuen Falls Hydroelectric expects to begin work in 2008 and complete the project in less than one year.
